Free things to do in Sydney's CBD

Sydney has a reputation as an expensive city, and a lot of the time it earns it. But some of the best things to do in the CBD cost nothing at all! You just have to know where they are...
Here's a local's list of good free things to do in the heart of the city, with not a tourist trap in sight.
Take a free walking tour
The best way to understand a city is on foot with someone who knows it. Our own Saturday tour runs pay-what-you-feel - there's no fee to book and at the end you decide what it was worth. It will take you through the history of Sydney from Hyde Park to the Harbour Bridge, and it's the obvious place to start if you want to make sense of the city. Details here.
Wander the Royal Botanic Gardens
Right on the harbour's edge, the Royal Botanic Gardens are free to enter and easy to lose an hour (or more!) in. Walk out to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for one of the classic views of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge framed together.
Catch Vivid Sydney (if you're here in winter)
For a few weeks each May and June, the city puts on the biggest free show of the year. Vivid Sydney lights up the harbour after dark - projections across the Opera House sails, glowing installations, and a continuous Light Walk that threads through Circular Quay, The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. The entire Light Walk is free, as is most of the festival, with only the bigger music, food and ideas events ticketed. There are free live music nights at Darling Harbour and drone shows over the water too.
If your visit lands in that window, it's the single best free thing to do in the city — just rug up a little, because it's the middle of a Sydney winter. (In 2026 it runs 22 May to 13 June, with the lights on from around 6pm each night; the dates shift slightly year to year, so check before you go.)
See world-class art for nothing
The Art Gallery of New South Wales offers free general admission to its main collection, which showcases both Australian and international art. The gallery is home to one of the country's most significant collections of work by First Nations artists.
Climb Observatory Hill
This quiet hilltop park above The Rocks has shade, lawns and sweeping views across the harbour to the north shote. It's one of the most pleasant and (surprisingly) least crowded spots in the city centre - perfect for a picnic on a sunny day.
Walk across the Harbour Bridge
You don't have to pay to climb the arch to enjoy views that span across the city and the harbour. The pedestrian footpath on the eastern side of the bridge is completely free and open all hours.
Step inside the Rocks Discovery Museum
Tucked into a restored warehouse in The Rocks, this small museum is free and open 10am-5pm daily. It tells the story of the area from before 1788 through to today. It's a good companion to a wander through the lanes outside.
Take a breather at a beautiful library
The State Library of New South Wales has grand reading rooms open to the public, and Customs House at Circular Quay holds a public library with harbour views. Both are free, quiet and far more impressive than a library has any right to be.
Explore Barangaroo Reserve
On the western side of the city, this headland park was rebuilt with sandstone and native planting to echo the original shoreline. It's free, it's on the water and the sunset walk back toward the Bridge is hard to beat.
Start with the story
If you do just one of these, make it the walking tour - everything else on this list means more once you know how the city came to be. Join us on Saturday and we'll set the scene for the rest.
